This course is designed to teach students basic and fundamental knowledge of the world of technical Theatre, which includes the following:

  • Lighting design
  • Set Design
  • Set Construction
  • Scenic Art/Painting
  • Safe Use of Equipment
  • Equipment Maintenance

Each student will be required to provide technical assistance for all school productions, assemblies, school dances, and special events during the semester. Some of the work students do in class and during productions is potentially dangerous. Students are expected to act in a responsible manner at all times for the safety of everyone in the class.

The following quotes express the essence of what this course is about:

“Theatre is about teamwork rather than isolated ideas and talents. Knowledge of equipment and techniques is only half the technician’s skill. The other half is the ability to work with others and understand their thinking. Without that, all the technical knowledge in the world is of little or no use. Teamwork is the essence of the drama itself and it is also why working in theatre is so rewarding.” - Neil Fraser, lighting design at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art

“ Putting on a play is essentially teamwork, teamwork which depends upon the creativity of administrators and craftsmen, performers, directing staff and stage crews. The team can best thrive when responsibilities are shared and lines of communication are always open, direct and cordial.”- David Mayer, Drama Teacher at Manchester University in England

    Expectations:

  • Class participation: All students are expected to participate in a responsible, respectful, positive manner in all class activities.
  • Students are expected to demonstrate, to the best of their ability, the level of their understanding of the various aspects of Technical Theatre covered in this class through their work and discussions in the class, as well as their work on school productions, assemblies, and special events.
  • Students are expected to attend tech rehearsals, regular rehearsals, and after school work sessions --as needed-- for productions that occur while taking this course. A significant portion of the work for this class may need to be done outside of class time.
  • Students are expected to arrive to class and rehearsals on time and ready to work. Lateness will not be tolerated.
