General Overview and Description

The Spanish program in the Lower school is an oral/aural program. It has two main objectives: to help students develop a working knowledge of the Spanish language and to introduce students to the culture of Spanish-speaking peoples. The program stimulates student interest through physical activities, attractive visual aids, and appealing auditory materials. A low-stress learning environment is supported through extensive use of positive reinforcement and an emphasis on meaningful communication. The activities are respectful of different learning styles and incorporate visual, auditory, and kinesthetic components. For a short time each year, Upper School Spanish Students have responsibility for teaching Lower School Spanish classes. This opportunity has been a valuable learning experience for both age groups.

Welcome

Dear 1st-5th grade parents:

My name is Betty Luna. I am delighted to be going into my seventh year of teaching Spanish at Sandy Spring Friends School. I am the Lower School Spanish teacher of your child and I want to welcome you all to this new school year.

I am looking forward to working closely with you and your child in this Language Adventure. Your child will have Spanish classes twice in the classroom where the oral/aural aspect be presented and once in the Tech Lab weekly to strengthen the auditory component.

As you prepare for the beginning of the year, please be certain that your child will review, practice, and learn the Spanish vocabulary that will be in the backpack for transporting homework from time to time. Fifth Grade parents and students will find it useful to check the Spanish Fifth Grade web page for homework assignments.

Get ready for the many new exciting phrases ahead. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to stop by my office located on the Technology hallway in the main LS building or email me at bluna@ssfs.org

I look forward to teach and have fun with your child.

Have a great year!

Sincerely,

Betty Luna
