Spanish Immersion Program

Sandy Spring Friends Day Camp offered for the first time a Spanish Immersion Program in the Summer of year 2000. It is a language enrichment program focused on a specific theme.

The Spanish Immersion Camp is a hands-on language experience. No prior knowledge of the language is required. During the first week, we will expose the campers to English to ensure that they feel comfortable in our environment and with the routines of the camp. The only exception to the full-time Spanish Immersion is that the swimming activities will be conducted in English. Besides the traditional fun summer camp activities, the Spanish Immersion Campers have a 45 minute period per day of more concentrated learning language. This academic hour will be fun, and relaxed yet instructive, ensuring that the children will be captivated by the language. The children will learn language through reading, songs, poetry, stories, and computer games. Throughout the day arts, sports, nature walks and other activities provide opportunity for language acquisition. As you may know, new or emerging speakers initially build listening comprehension. As their comfort level increases, the ability to integrate increasingly complex concepts becomes greater.
