HISTORICAL MARYLAND INTERSESSION

Five days of fun, literature, history and architecture. This trip consists of five day trips into the culture of the area in which we live. We leave from school every day by nine o'clock and return by 3:30. Historic Maryland is led by Bob Hoch, History Department Chair, and David Kahn, English Department Chair. This trip has been a tradition at Sandy Spring Friends School for over ten years. We will have lunch at area resturants. The cost of two hundred and twenty-five dollars includes everything.

Day One: Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, home of the John Brown Raid. We tour the town and climb to Jefferson
                Rock.

Day Two: Gettysburg Battle Field, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. We start at the Electric Map and Museum. The
group will recreate the charge from Devil's Den to Little Round Top.

Day Three: St. Michael's Maritime Museum, St. Michael's, Maryland. We tour the museum with a retired waterman
to recreate life on the Bay. We will learn how to dredge oysters, identify waterfowl and learn about life in a
                  lighthouse.

Day Four: Westminster Burying Ground, Baltimore, Maryland. We will visit the grave of Edgar Allen Poe and hear a
lecture on Poe and the Victorian death ritual.

Day Five: Pope-Leighey House, Woodlawn, Virginia. We will visit the Pope-Leighy House, designed by the architect
Frank Lloyd Wright for the American workingman and hear a lecture on America's most famous
