Graduation Requirements

To be eligible for graduation from Sandy Spring Friends School, a student must meet the following foreign language requirements in the Upper School:

Successful completion of three years in any one Foreign Language (Spanish or French).

Student Placement is made by the French & Spanish Department. Permission to advance to the next level of a foreign language is not normally granted to students achieving less than a C- (69.5%) average, unless proof of additional satisfactory work (e.g. summer school) is submitted for validation.

Any new student entering SSFS after the 9th grade with previous high school French or Spanish experience will still be expected to satisfy the SSFS Upper School three-year common second language graduation requirement. For those students who, by virtue of a placement test, are asked by SSFS to repeat a level for which they’ve already received credit at their former high school, the previous course(s) will count toward the satisfaction of said requirement regardless of placement.

Any new student entering SSFS after the 9th grade without previous high school French or Spanish experience will be required to take a common and consecutive second language course for each year enrolled at SSFS.
