SSFS MEN'S SOCCER TEAMS UP TO SUPPORT 2010 SUMMER SERVICE LEARNING TRIP TO SOUTH AFRICA
Kurland Village, South Africa (Jan. '10) -- SSFS Men's Varsity Soccer veterans, Drew Carneal ('11) and Braeden Kelly ('12) will participate this summer in a service learning trip to South Africa intended to offer supplemental reading and writing, dramatic/dance and studio arts, athletics (a full soccer program), life skills (drugs, sex, and AIDS), and computer/library instruction to the children of Kurland Village, a marginalized, historically-disadvantaged, and poverty-stricken rural township comprised of Coloured Afrikaans and Black Xhosa speaking persons. In support, the SSFS Men’s Varsity Soccer Team is helping to coordinate a collection of equipment to send to underprivileged 8-15 year old soccer players in Kurland Village. Needs include good-condition cleats, full sets of uniform shirts and shorts, as well as good-condition practice jerseys, warm-ups, balls, socks, and shin-guards. Any surplus equipment will be distributed to local Maryland, DC, and Virginia soccer programs in need of good supplies. Donations can be brought to Coach Polón's classroom (Room 105, Moore Hall).

2009 ALL-GAZETTE BOYS SOCCER TEAM ANNOUNCED
Olney, MD (Dec. '09) -- SSFS Ring-of-Honor inductee Luke Savonis ('10) received Honorable Mention recognition to the 2009 All-Gazette Boys Soccer Team (published Wednesday, December 9th). This is quite an achievement, as it means that the Gazette selecting Sports Staff places Luke among their top forty high school soccer players in Montgomery County. Considering there are over thirty high schools comprising some six hundred potential candidates, both public and private, in one of the nation's soccer hotbeds, this is a tremendous recognition for Luke, to go along with his previous honors this past fall: 2009 All-Conference 1st Team, 2009 All-Tournament Francisco Hope Classic 1st Team, and 2009 SSFS Kip Kelley Gentleman-Warrior Award. Bravo! To learn of 'Beests previously recognized as All-County, please visit Hall of Fame or simply click here. To visit Gazette.Net's All-Gazette Teams directly click here. |
