TALES OF TWO 'BEESTS: 2010 SUMMER SERVICE LEARNING TRIP TO SOUTH AFRICA
Kurland Village, South Africa (Aug. '10) -- SSFS Men's Varsity Soccer Assistant Captain, Drew Carneal ('11) and Braeden Kelly ('12) participated this summer in a service learning trip to South Africa where they helped offer supplemental reading and writing, dramatic/dance and studio arts, athletics (a full soccer program), life skills (drugs, sex, and AIDS), and computer/library instruction to the children of Kurland Village, a marginalized, historically-disadvantaged, and poverty-stricken rural township comprised of Coloured Afrikaans and Black Xhosa speaking persons. In support, the SSFS Men’s Varsity Soccer Team helped coordinate a collection of soccer equipment delivered to underprivileged 8-15 year old soccer players in Kurland Village, which Drew and Braeden helped coach and manage in a local youth tournament.
