 SSFS Soccer: Future

Off-Season Training > Sunday Soccer

"Our goal is not to win. It's to play together and to play hard. Then, winning takes care of itself."
- Mike Krzyzewski

WHAT IS SUNDAY SOCCER?
Sunday Soccer
has been a Men's Soccer tradition since 1996. Often serving as a conditioning catalyst for spring sports, Sunday Soccer is a free and voluntary 4v4 indoor mini tournament held annually, intended to combat the winter doldrums, from early/mid January to late February or early March, running from 10:00am-12:00pm in the original SSFS Carol F. Horning gymnasium in Yarnall Hall.

HOW DOES SUNDAY SOCCER WORK?
Not predetermined, teams of four are assigned upon arrival by the supervising staff. Games run 8-minutes or first team to 3 goals, whichever comes first.  Small goals with no keepers are employed, stressing the importance of good footwork for all players -- goalies included. Sunday Soccer is a delightful, friendly, healthy and competitive environment for our boys to unite, play, exercise, compete and bond.  I invite you to speak with any of the kids who have already experienced Sunday Soccer to attest to its success.

WHO PARTICIPATES?
Supervised by Coach Polón, Sunday Soccer continues to be a haven for alums to return, seniors to make a final hurrah, future leaders to develop and prospective players to acclimate.  Spectators (parents, relatives, etc.) are certainly welcome, and are often pleasantly surprised by the quality of play and competition. In the occasional event of excessive numbers of interested participants, priority of play is always given to SSFS boys with generous efforts made to best incorporate everyone else.

WHAT TO BRING?
Aside from appropriate athletic wear, all that is required are decent "flats": a.k.a. running shoes, indoor soccer shoes, gym shoes, turfs, etc.  A water fountain and bathroom are located just outside the gym, and the bleachers make for a fine rest and recovery venue while watching the other matches and waiting for one's next turn.

WHY SUNDAY MORNING?
Two hours of exhilarating activity in the morning, while kids themselves would otherwise be sleeping-in or groggy, is often just what the doctor ordered heading into an otherwise committed day of studying.  We fully recognize the regrettable conflict that utilizing Sunday morning may have on a select group of church goers, and apologize for any inconvenience this may bring or cause -- that is certainly not the intent.

Nonetheless, years of experience have confirmed that 10:00am-12:00pm seems to be the time that best meets the majority of the people's needs: not too early for the kids to get up, not so late that it chops up the day for families, not in the middle of the weekend (Saturday) which takes away the hope of any short getaways, plus Sunday evening seems equally sacred family/homework time.

PARKING
To access the original SSFS Carol F. Horning gymnasium in Yarnall Hall, follow the entrance road onto campus to the stop sign. Proceed straight, past the stop sign, and follow to the end of the road, at the brick pillars located in the heart of campus. Park in the adjacent gravel lot, which is traditionally reserved for the Lower School, but not on weekends. Across the street from the parking lot, next to the teaching modulars, follow the sidewalk that leads to Yarnall Hall. Once inside Yarnall Hall, take the staircase down to the Carol F. Horning gymnasium.
