INTRODUCING MANAGER AVERY MULLIGAN ('12)
Sandy Spring, MD (May '10) -- Coach Polón is proud to introduce Avery Mulligan ('12) as the squad's new Manager.  Avery brings enthusiasm, commitment and organization to the program, to go along with an exceptionally kind disposition and generous nature.  In addition, this rising leader harbors an intrinsic team-first attitude honed through her collaborative experiences as a member of the Women’s Varsity Lacrosse Team and the Upper School’s Dance Program.  Avery's primary responsibilities will include practice and game-day equipment and sideline preparations, statistician, scoreboard, and timekeeper, maintaining team rosters, monitoring the first-aid kit, occasional media relations related to reporting scores to local press, as well as serving as hostess for visiting opponents and referees. To underscore Coach Polón's value of this staff position, the Men's Varsity Soccer Team has only had five Manager's during his fifteen-year tenure: Kelly Mundell ('99), Angelica Cota ('00-'02), Michelle Bennett ('03-'04), Rachel Stevens ('05-'06) and Esperanza “Espa” Loaiza (’08-’09).  Congratulations, Avery!  Welcome aboard!

This introduction to the professional world of European football training proved formative for Reed, as he focuses on his highly anticipated senior campaign followed by a future in soccer that's looking increasingly brighter, bigger and more promising for this standout netminder.
SSFS MEN'S SOCCER TEAMS UP TO SUPPORT 2010 SUMMER SERVICE LEARNING TRIP TO SOUTH AFRICA
Kurland Village, South Africa (Jan. '10) -- SSFS Men's Varsity Soccer veterans, Drew Carneal ('11) and Braeden Kelly ('12) will participate this summer in a service learning trip to South Africa intended to offer supplemental reading and writing, dramatic/dance and studio arts, athletics (a full soccer program), life skills (drugs, sex, and AIDS), and computer/library instruction to the children of Kurland Village, a marginalized, historically-disadvantaged, and poverty-stricken rural township comprised of Coloured Afrikaans and Black Xhosa speaking persons.  In support, the SSFS Men’s Varsity Soccer Team is helping to coordinate a collection of equipment to send to underprivileged 8-15 year old soccer players in Kurland Village. Needs include good-condition cleats, full sets of uniform shirts and shorts, as well as good-condition practice jerseys, warm-ups, balls, socks, and shin-guards. Any surplus equipment will be distributed to local Maryland, DC, and Virginia soccer programs in need of good supplies. Donations can be brought to Coach Polón's classroom (Room 105, Moore Hall).

SSFS MEN’S SOCCER PROGRAM SCORES OFF THE FIELD, TOO
Zihuatanejo, Mexico (Dec. '09) -- This past summer, former SSFS parents, Antonio Cancino and Shadia Garrison, who runs a website about socially conscious travel titled The Mindful Tourist, along with their two boys, visited Zihuatanejo, Mexico, with seven very large bags of good quality clothes, along with a  dozen new and used soccer balls, and ten pairs of soccer shoes of assorted sizes, much of which was donated by staff and parents from Sandy Spring Friends School, coordinated through the Men’s Soccer Program, both middle and upper school teams.

Some of the clothing was donated directly to one of the poorest schools in Zihuatanejo, Las Joyas, for distribution to the neediest families.  The remainder has been donated to two “micro businesses”, small start-ups “funded” by outside sources to help those in need start their own business.  This has proven to be a very successful initiative around the world in the fight to stop poverty.  The first micro business is right at Las Joyas, where the children of the 5th and 6th grades run an open store on Thursdays.  The other micro business is run by a 6th grade girl who needs to raise money to continue in school next year.

On behalf of the students at Las Joyas, as well as Antonio, Shadia, and their boys, along with former Middle School Boys Soccer Coach, Kip Kelley, Men's Varsity Soccer Coach, Eduardo Polón, extends special thanks to all ‘Beests who helped contribute to this wonderfully worthy cause!

ASSISTANT COACH ROBERT "ACE" MALLONEE MOVES ON
Sandy Spring, MD (Apr '09) -- After three successful seasons as Coach Polón's right-hand man ('06-'08), Assistant Coach Robert "Ace" Mallonee will leave Sandy Spring Friends School upon conclusion of the 2008-2009 academic year in pursuit of new challenges. During his formal three-year tenure, the SSFS Men's Varsity Soccer Program earned an overall regular season and playoff record of 34-8-8 (including a conference record of 27-5-6), with 145 goals in favor versus 35 against, that resulted in three conference championships: 2006 PVAC League & Tournament banners and the most recent 2008 PVAC Tournament banner. A 'Beest alum himself ('00), as well as record-holding keeper (Lowest PVAC Goals Against Average During Regular Season & Playoffs: 0.18 GAA in 1999) and Ring-of-Honor inductee ('99), Robert returned to SSFS in the fall of 2005, shortly after his graduation from Guilford College (B.S. Sports Management, '04), to "let his life speak" by giving back to the community he feels gave him so much. A four-year member of the Residence Hall Staff, Robert first served as an Assistant Volunteer to the undefeated 2005 SSFS Men's Varsity Soccer championship squad (18-0-0), before accepting his formal position to start the fall 2006 campaign. Robert would later add Head Coach of the Men's Lacrosse Team to his resume. Congratulations Robert! You will be missed at SSFS, but we couldn't be happier for you as you look to pursue your dreams!
THE PLACE OF SPORTS IN AMERICAN CULTURE: ETHICS IN ATHLETICS
Sandy Spring, MD (Feb. '09) -- On Wednesday, April 1st, at 7:15pm in Studio B of the Sandy Spring Friends School Performing Arts Center, Coach Eduardo Polón will present a free lecture open to the public titled, "The Place of Sports in American Culture: Ethics in Athletics" as part of the 14th Annual SSFS Faculty Lecture Series. The abstract reads, “Sports in America are sadly becoming increasingly more distorted; a slippery slope where ambition leads to obsession: a seedy place where the ends justify the means, and often at any cost. In this marketplace of ideas, my objective is to reason persuasively a position that rests atop an altruistic foundation – that is, sport raised to the level of moral discipline.” To learn more and/or see an exclusive advertisement in MS Word format click here.
'BEESTS KICKIN' IT: SERVICE THROUGH SOCCER
Sandy Spring, MD (Jan. '09) -- Several dedicated SSFS student-athletes, and aspiring leaders, from both the Men's and Women's Varsity Soccer Teams volunteered their time this winter to create a meaningful, grassroots opportunity by sharing their knowledge of and passion for soccer with a select group of 8-year-old girls who have shown a heightened interest in taking their skills to a new level. For seven consecutive weekends through January and February, these wonderful SSFS ambassadors have chosen to sacrifice their Sunday afternoons by opening their hearts, as well as SSFS' Carol F. Horning Gymnasium, to participate positively with these wide-eyed hopefuls and dreamers, from leading and teaching proper stretching exercises and warm-ups (e.g., introductory Speed Ladder drills) to serving as gentle and encouraging teammates (e.g., as foils, captains, and assistant coaches) in small-sided games. Together, these mentoring big buddies have created a safe, friendly, and highly stimulating environment for these impressionable young girls to improve themselves both on and off the athletic pitch, confirming with their actions the sentiment of George Fox -- and long-standing credo of Sandy Spring Friends School -- "Let Your Lives Speak." ALUM UPDATE: ROBBY DALLAS REIDER ('03)
Los Angeles, CA (Jan. '09) -- 2002 'Beest Assistant Captain, 2000 PVAC Champion, and former midfielder Robby Dallas Reider ('03) and his Friday Night Boys bandmates' meteoric rise in the music industry is evidenced at first glance from their fast-approaching 6 million plays on their popular MySpace site. On the heels of their celebrated appearance on MTV's TRL (Total Request Live) last July, the FNBs signed with famed music label Fueled by Ramen, debuting their EP "That's What She Said" to rave reviews. With momentum on their side, the start of 2009 finds the Boys in Los Angeles, collaborating with renowned, hit-making producer Eman Kiriakou, whose recent credits include Backstreet Boys, Nick Lachey, Vanessa Hudgens, Celine Dion, and New Kids on the Block (as well as American Idols Elliott Yamin, Jordin Sparks, Clay Aiken, Katharine McPhee, and David Archuleta) on the FNBs first full-length CD anticipated this spring. When the opportunity to rub shoulders with industry icons the likes of Eman Kiriakou, Kara DioGuardi (American Idols newest judge), and Justin Timberlake (see photo) present themselves, it would appear that the sky's the limit for Robby and the Friday Night Boys. Congratulations, Robby!
ALUM UPDATE: JOSHUA LICHTENSTEIN ('04)
State College, PA (Jan. '09) -- Former 'Beest defensive midfielder ('01-'03) and member of the 2001 PVAC League Championship squad, Joshua Lichtenstein ('02) writes, "I'm really proud of the success this year's team had in claiming another conference championship and wish all the best to the graduating seniors.  In December I graduated from the George Washington University with a Bachelor's degree in Political Science and History.  Next month I am moving to Israel for six months to study at the WUJS Institute in Tel Aviv.  The program will be a mixture of Ulpan, intensive Hebrew language studies, and a professional internship.  Since 1949 nearly 1.3 million graduates have completed the program and it has become a model around the world for nations seeking to revive their languages.  I'm going to be working at a humanitarian aid organization called Latet.  Latet was founded in 1996 to provide assistance to needy populations in Israel and around the world.  They help coordinate operations of over 120 nonprofit associations, soup kitchens, and municipal social services departments across the country.  They also facilitate the delivery of medications to chronically ill patients, most of whom are elderly.  I will be working in their public relations and fund raising department. Congratulations Joshua! To learn more about the WUJS click here. To see Joshua's player portrait click here.

This was most recently evidenced the last week of October, as Reed helped his McLean, Virginia, club team claim their State Cup Championship by stopping two penalty kicks in a shootout, and then only days later sent his varsity 'Beests into overtime by scoring the tying goal in the PVAC Championship match with less than three minutes remaining. LEADERSHIP TRINITY SET FOR 2008
Sandy Spring, MD (Jun '08) -- Announced at the final session of this winter's SSFS Sunday Soccer, and recently posted on this very homepage, rising senior Chris Jones ('09) will wear the Captain's armband for the 2008 men's varsity soccer campaign. Flanking him on either side, to form a veteran leadership trinity, will be Assistant Captains Sam Schneider ('09) and Luke Savonis ('10). In only three seasons, Sam (2007 All-PVAC 1st Team & 2006 Tournament MVP) already has earned four program records for keepers, including 32 regular season and playoff shutouts. Luke, a rising junior and devoted year-round soccer player, has played in 40 varsity games the past two seasons, registering 36 points on 17 goals and 2 assists as an underclassman. ALUMNI UPDATE: A LETTER FROM GAVIN MAGUIRE ('02)
Fort Sill, OK (Oct '07) -- "I just completed Basic Officer Leadership Course, Phase II at Ft. Sill, OK.  BOLC II is the first major course that Second Lieutenants go to after their commissioning.  It involves officers from all branches (e.g., MP, Aviation, Infantry, etc.) and all commissioning sources (ROTC, West Point, and OCS).   Some of the training that we went through was combatives, marksmanship (basic, reflexive, convoy and night fire), land navigation, Forward Operating Base, Quick Reaction Force, and Urban-Operations. It exposes officers of all branches to certain procedures and equipment that they will likely see in their future units; act as a training program that unifies all officers; and allow officers to network with and get to know those of different branches and commissioning sources.  I was the only Honor Grad in my platoon and one of three in my company. I just got to Ft. Leonard Wood, MO and will start Military Police Officer Basic Course.  I'm excited to finally get into the meat and potatoes of 2LT training and I am eager to learn MP-specific skills and procedures.  I'll be here, doing MP OBC, until the end of January, after which, I'll be headed to Korea to serve in the 2nd Infantry Division."

ALUM UPDATE: STEVEN MATTHEWS ('06)
Blacksburg, VA (May '07) -- Former Captain, three-time PVAC Champion, and current Virginia Tech undergrad, Steven Matthews (’06), has granted Coach Polón permission to share a personal tale, which in spite of its sadness is a story worth telling. "I am pretty good friends with a girl here at Virginia Tech named Heather. Her roommate, Emily, was killed in her dorm room on April 16th. Heather had returned from Tabernacle, New Jersey, her hometown, the night before the events, at 1:00am. Instead of going back to her dorm, she decided to stay at a friend's house for the night (a decision that proved to save her life). Her roommate, Emily, also stayed with a friend that night, but she was dropped back off at the dorm that morning a few minutes after 7:00am. She was murdered several minutes later by the now notorious Virginia Tech assailant in what would tragically prove to be the start of this campus nightmare. Heather returned to her room just twenty minutes later to find detectives and crime scene investigators, who later informed her that her roommate had been killed. Had my friend, Heather, chosen to stay in her room, she would undoubtedly not be here today. As odd as it may sound, I may not have even begun to appreciate life fully until this terrible event, which has now taught me just how precious it is. Although exceptionally negative and undoubtedly horrific, it has taught me a great deal about the sensitivity of life, and has most likely turned me, and many others, into a better person." SSFS has four graduates currently attending Virginia Tech. We were all relieved to learn of their physical safety and immediate well-being. Our thoughts and prayers remain with them and all those affected by this horrific tragedy. Knowing the exceptional character of these fine SSFS graduates, comfort can be found in knowing that they are serving as pillars of strength and support for those in most need within their Virginia Tech community.
LEWIS EARNS ARMBAND AS RIGHT HAND MAN
Sandy Spring , MD (Apr ’07) – The 2007 Men's Varsity Soccer Team continues excitingly to take shape. Having previously announced Ashton Imlay (’08) as Captain and Keelin O’Donoghue (’09) as Manager, Coach Polón invites the community to congratulate rising senior midfielder, Aaron Lewis (’08) for being named Assistant Captain to this fall’s men’s varsity soccer campaign. This two-time PVAC All-Star and eligible program Ring of Honor candidate made his varsity debut as a mere 8th grader. Since, he has earned not only the respect of both his teammates and his opponents through his selfless sacrifice, program loyalty, and lionhearted approach to the game, but also the recent admiration of a plethora of competing Division I and III collegiate programs. Not surprisingly, Aaron was recently named Co-Captain of the highly regarded Bethesda Mavericks. Ultimately, it has been Aaron's commitment off the field this year --in the classroom -- that was the final determining factor, proving his mettle beyond the ball. In addition, and alongside 2007 Captain Ashton Imlay, Aaron will further his leadership skills by serving as a volunteer counselor at this summer's Polón Pride Boys Soccer Camp to be held Monday, July 30th-Friday, August 3rd. Hagerstown, MD (Mar '07) -- "March 21st, 2007 marks the one year anniversary of my life-changing traumatic brain injury. This year has been the most challenging of my admittedly short life but, given the severity of my injury, I have been blessed with an amazing recovery. I am currently working towards my Masters degree and am on track to commission into the Army as a Military Police Officer this May. On this, the first, anniversary, I would like to reiterate my appreciation for what you have done for me over the past year. Because of this experience, I have come to realize the power of prayer and the value of the personal support that both my parents and I received from the community. I credit the help and encouragement you have given me, at the various stages of my recovery, as the biggest reason I am where I am now. I just hope that I can take what I have learned through this ordeal to better serve my future soldiers and to better support my friends and family when they are faced with similarly great challenges, just as my friends and family have collectively supported me during this challenge. Sincerely, Gavin"

FORMER 'BEEST TO COACH ST. ANDREW'S GIRLS VARSITY
Potomac, MD (Jul '06) -- Former Beest Tri-Captain, 1999 PVAC League & Tournament champion, four-year Division 1 soccer player at the University of Delaware, and current QuickFeet Soccer Training Head Trainer Justin Reid has accepted the offer to coach St. Andrews' Girls Varsity team starting in the fall of 2006. Taking over the varsity position will mean that Justin will have the opportunity to coach against his high school alma mater Sandy Spring Friends at the Francisco Hope Tournament in early September. “The irony in all of this is that I played my final high school game for Sandy Spring at St. Andrews' field in 2000 in the Potomac Valley Conference Final. In my wildest dreams I would have never thought that I would be coaching the Girls Varsity team six years later, but, a lot of thanks goes to those who have helped me get to this point, and have provided me with this opportunity.” To learn more about Justin's QuickFeet Soccer Training program click here. Grinnell, IA (Nov '05) -- Two-time former Beest Captain, three-time PVAC Champion, Ring-of-Honor recipient and Senior Captain for Grinnell College Men's Varsity Soccer Team Kip Kelley ('02) writes, "I've been following you all throughout the season and I am so impressed. I want you to know that your achievements have not only raised eyebrows across Maryland, but have transcended the PVAC to inspire me at the DIII level in Iowa. We struggled to stay alive this season, registering seven consecutive losses in the Midwest Conference. As psychologically draining as it is to handle loss after loss in close-fought games, your successes 1,000 miles away continued to give me hope. I found strength in my soccer roots. Your consistent wins and gentlemanly conduct were proof to me that it is worth doing things the right way. And persistence pays off. In our last games we beat Carroll College (the #2 MWC team at the time) 3-0 and toppled a major non-conference foe, Simpson College (IAC), 4-2. I thank you fellas from the bottom of my heart for giving me the inspiration to help Grinnell earn a solid end to our season and my own soccer playing career!" Thank you Kip and congratulations! Urbana-Champaign, IL (Oct '05) -- University of Illinois freshman, former Beest keeper and member of last season's 15-2-1 PVAC Tournament-winning squad, Adam Pankowski ('05) writes, "Let me just say how great it was to see you and the boys. It's definitely different seeing the program now as a spectator rather than a player. School here is going fine, classes are hard and ROTC as always is amazing. I joined the Drill Team so I now have my own M1 Rifle, (as scary as that may be...) Anyways, SSFS looks amazing with all the construction finally coming together. I hope I'll be able to come back and visit sooner rather than later. Good luck to you and all the boys for the rest of the season and into the playoffs. I know the team will make everyone proud." Thank you and congratulations Panqueque! To see Adam's player portrait click here.

ALUM UPDATE: PANG SIRITHIENTHONG ('01)
Bangkok, Thailand (Oct '05) -- Former Beest forward and member of the 13-4-2 PVAC banner-winning squad of 2000, Pang Sirithienthong ('01) writes, "Since I left SSFS, the things I talk and think about the most are soccer and friends, and how lucky I was to be able to play alongside so many interesting people.  Starting from the coaches down to the players, this year, I am very certain that SSFS futbol will continue to have tremendous success.  As for me, I am working full time in Thailand, acting as an Administrative and Human Resouces Manager for my father's company.  As for the future, I am planning to earn my MBA in '06 but have yet to take the test.  Lastly, I would like to say GOODLUCK! to you and all the boys. Keep it up!" Thank you and congratulations Pang! To see Pang's player portrait click here.
ALUM UPDATE: HEE JIN KANG ('00)
Baltimore, MD (Sep '05) -- Former Beest midfielder and member of the legendary 16-1-1 PVAC banner-winning and tournament-winning squad of 1999, Hee Jin Kang ('00) writes, "Though it has been two years, I have checked the soccer section of the website several times and I noticed that you guys are spending another successful year in 2005. I am really pleased with the results. As I had experienced already, I believe in you, Eduardo. With your ability to manage the team, supported by the other coaches, families, and friends, and especially the boys on the field practicing hard, with all of these factors combined, the results are obvious. And, for me...I transferred to Johns Hopkins University in 2004 and I will graduate in the spring of 2006. It will take six years for me to graduate college, but I must have 150 credits to take the CPA exam, so I am only one year behind. I guess that it is not too bad for an international student. I really miss all my friends and the moments on the field.   I hope I can come to one of the games this year. Finally, have another successful season!" Thank you and congratulations Hee Jin! 'BEESTS EARN WIN 100 UNDER COACH POLÓN TENURE
Washington, DC (Sep '05) -- The recent 5-0 yeomen's victory over conference opponent Edmund Burke marked the 100th regular season &/or playoff win for the SSFS Men's Varsity Soccer Team during the decade-long tenure under Coach Polón. Of course, this is not a personal achievement as 84 Gentlemen-Warriors, 7 Varsity Assistants, 4 Managers, 2 Athletic Directors, 2 Trainers, and countless other Beest Boosters helped make it possible. In 10 seasons the program has amounted a record of 100-45-13, which included the humble but pioneering two-win inaugural campaign of '96 and the shortened '02 campaign due to the DC area sniper incident. In addition, the Beests have established a tradition of excellence with nine consecutive winning seasons. Never putting "wins" or "winning" ahead of doing things well, these 100 victories represent vision, longevity, dedication, collectivity, consistency and commitment to excellence. Congratulations to all!
AMAZING GRACE, HOW SWEET THE SOUND
Sandy Spring, MD (Sep '05) -- The 2005 SSFS Men's Varsity Soccer Team would like to publicly thank Mr. Christopher Imlay (Ashton '08) for his willingness to perform on his traditional Great Highland Bagpipe at various home games as part of helping generate a festive pregame atmosphere. Historically, the bagpipe is known as an instrument of war from Roman times to the 'brave heart' days of William Wallace, and from Bonnie Prince Charlie to the siege of the Alamo. In fact, in World War I the fierce kilted Highlanders were known as the 'Ladies from Hell' when Scottish pipers led their troops into battle. Curiously, since no clan ever went into battle without a piper, bagpipes were eventually banned as a weapon of war -- the only musical instrument ever to be banned as a weapon. Of course, Sandy Spring Friends School simply appreciates the beautiful chill inspired by its sounds both of lament and inspiration. Thank you Christopher!

This summer I spent six weeks in the Arizona highlands, participating in the construction of an experimental urban laboratory.  Isolated in on an elevated mesa north of Phoenix, this ongoing project focuses on the integration of the living, working and recreation areas for thousands of people into a single unified structure.  The program was a vital blend of philosophy, aesthetic and firsthand construction experience, and I feel very fortunate to have had this experience.  I’m also working on several commissioned artworks right now, everything from portraits to landscape paintings. Hope everyone is doing well!" Congratulations Jonathan! To see Jonathan's player portrait click here.

The long term plan is to join Teach for America for 2 years after graduation, then go to grad school in immunology or microbiology, and then go stomp out disease the world over. To that end I have a part time job in a microbiology lab on campus. Last year I was working with my boss on a new and improved flu vaccine. At the moment I've almost finished  6 weeks of summer classes in Spain. If anyone gets the chance to study in Salamanca I highly recommend it. It's beautiful, and while it's not the most impressive Spanish city (in my humble opinion) it is a great city to be in if you're a student. So life is good. Best wishes to everyone, I hope we'll run into each other now and again. Take care." Congratulations Geoffrey! To see Geoffrey's player portrait click here.

My on paper major is Athletic Training with a Pre-Physical Therapy focus and a Minor in Psychology. For PT Doctorate I'm looking into Thomas Jefferson or Weidner University in Philadelphia. I'm quite busy with the school's athletics, with lots of difficult classes, including Pharmacology and Orthopedic Assessment of the Upper Extremity. I found a new love in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, known as the "Pit Bull of Martial Arts." It's quite similar to freestyle wrestling except that it's okay to be on your back (no pins) and there are submission holds which give you the automatic win or loss, depending on which end you're at. I'm training hard 3x's a week in the BJJ Dojo, getting rolling time, and 5x's a week in the weight room. I'm currently trying to get a summer internship at Lehigh Valley Hospital's Burns Unit Rehabilitation Center (one of PA's Largest Hospitals), and I work on a dairy farm in New Tripoli, PA for extra cash. My folks are doing great, and they are quite happy with everything that they are up to in their small town. I hope everyone is doing well. I'm looking foward to hearing how other people are doing. Thanks and much love, Tom Sadler (SSFS 03')" Congratulations Tom! To see Tom's player portrait click here

ALUM UPDATE: SIRIUS CHUNG (’98)
Seoul, South Korea (Mar ’05) -- Former Beest striker Sirius Chung ('98) writes, "I've just finished the army service back home in South Korea. Because of the high state of tension these days with North Korea, I was trained very hard. I learned a lot from the army life. And now, I'm a free man! The thing I most wanted to do after the army was take a short trip back to America to see [Eduardo], Justin, Sergio, SSFS, etc. But right now there are still so many things to do to prepare for my future. I'm studying Chinese because I want to transfer to a Chinese university. The experience of learning English helps me learn other languages. Though my dream in America was not completed, I'll challenge on, this time in China. I know that most of my American friends have already finished college. Korean guys normally graduate from college two years later than American students because of our obligation to the army. I'll definitely see you in the near future. 2004 'BEESTS CONTINUE TO TAKE SHAPE
Sandy Spring, MD (Mar. '04) -- Following nine winter weeks of off-season Sunday Soccer, rising junior and Ring of Honor candidate Steven Matthews ('06) was formally named Assistant Captain to this upcoming fall's varsity squad. This appointment, in the wake of last November's banquet announcement proclaiming rising senior Michael Davis ('05) Captain, establishes a leadership foundation through the 2005 season. An outside midfielder, Steven joined the varsity as a freshman in 2002 where his deceptive speed and array of crosses secured the right side as his place on the pitch, playing in fourteen matches his rookie campaign. By the end of his breakout sophomore season Steven was a nineteen game starter, bringing fans at the Preuss Field to the edge of their seats when let loose on the flank, eventually tallying thirty points on nine goals and twelve assists. Having transitioned from worker bee to impact player, Steven currently sits respectively in 10th, 12th and 11th place for Individual Career Assists (12), Goals (12) and Points (36), as well as 4th place for Single Season Assists (12 in 19 appearances) in 2003. Congratulations Steven!

Consequently, Coach Polón has fittingly decided that the formal and ceremonial transition of power between 2003 Captain, Andrew Eden, and 2004 Captain, Michael, should occur in Michael's home state, in the presence of his family. Congratulations Michael!
