 SSFS Soccer: Past

Traditions > Jersey Distribution

In honor of el jogo bonito, the SSFS Men's Varsity Soccer team tries to adhere to and instill in its players many soccer traditions, among them jersey distribution. Therefore, the principle eleven starters at the beginning of every season receive jersey numbers according to their position on the pitch. The specifics of this tradition vary from region to region and from alignment to alignment. What appears below is the traditional Argentine system: 4-3-3 with a líbero (sweeper).

Furthermore, the #10 jersey has taken on a still greater significance over the recent decades. Although the #10 was traditionally worn by the outside left midfielder, it has become increasingly more customary to be worn by the pivotal mastermind personality of a team, though not necessarily the captain, but often the creative midfielder or enganche (withdrawn forward).

At SSFS the #10 is a revered jersey donned only by the elite and precious few that embody the ultimate gentlemen-warrior spirit both on and off the pitch. It remains among the greater honors with which one can be bestowed on the team.
