Auction: Past and Present Works

Auction 2008
Ceramic Serving Platters glazed in styles inspired by the art of famous artists or art eras.
1st Grade took inspiration from the art of Wassily Kandinsky to make colorful concentric circles on their platter for the auction.
Georgia O'Keefe provided the idea for this bunch of flowers. The 2nd grade class had great experience in painting large perspective views of flowers after their beautiful floorcloth project.
Henri Matisse and his undulating colorful abstract shapes inspired the 3rd grade while painting their auction donation.
Vincent Van Gogh and his beautiful Starry Night was recreated by the 4th graders on their platter. Stars, the luminescent moon, and large brush strokes of glaze all help to convey his unique style.
Piet Mondrian and his love of simple shapes and the relationship between colors provided the source of design for the 5th grade auction platter.
Butcher Block Painted Table

The 3rd through 5th grades painted stylized flowers on a large piece of finished butcher block, transforming it into a garden of blossoms. Blacksmith Peter Austin created the wrought iron table base, complete with stems and branches.

Frank Stella inspired Sculptural Wall Paintings made by the 1-3rd grades using hand painted canvas.
Freestanding Sculptures for the 2006 Auction

Two free standing figure sculptures will be built by the 4th and 5th grade classes and glazed by all LS art students. Using leather hard slabs, the score and slip method will be employed to attach the clay pieces together. One figure will be sitting, looking up, and the second, will be doing a handstand.

Painted Floorcloth for the 2005 auction..

Fall leaves were traced by the 4th graders, cut out of contact paper and applied to a pre-painted floorcloth. It was repainted, over the contact paper leaves, with a second color by the 2nd graders. The 3rd graders then painted random blops. When dry, the contact paper was removed, thus revealing the hidden leaves. A striped edge was then painted. The floorcloth was sealed with 9 coats of shellac and polished with wax. The back was signed and decorated by all the students.

Final beautiful piece.

Tile themes were inspired by pretend conversations with visiting Martians. The planet Mars was close to earth during the summer of 2003, and martians popped down to see what was what with our blue planet. Using art as an universal language to communicate, tiles were made expressing concepts that the kids felt were important characteristics and values about our world and society. These tiles were then used to make the tables and the peace poles.
