Course Outline

This course in painting and drawing is designed for beginning to advanced art students. It is designed to encourage independence and self-motivation in a studio environment. The first half of the course develops drawing skills and prepares students to apply these skills to painting projects. The student will work on technical ability, including shading, perspective, and drawing from life, as well as personal expression.

The second half of the course focuses on developing painting skills (understanding color theory, manipulating different paint media) and encourages the development of personal themes for student work. Students will learn different painting techniques and how to properly use materials.

During the semester we also will attempt to examine and analyze both historical and contemporary artworks. We will investigate how artists have interpreted the world around them, and communicated their ideas, concepts and feelings through their art. Both realistic and abstract art will be addressed.

Evaluation

For each project you will be given certain criteria you are expected to meet. After the completion of each project you will be given an evaluation sheet to rate yourself on how well you met each criteria. I will then grade each project, taking into consideration your self-evaluation. The quality of work you put into your assignments, the conscientiousness with which you keep your sketchbook, the creativity you apply to your assignments, and the attention you give to the discussion of other students’ work during critiques will all affect part of your final grade. Your work will not be compared with other students. You will be graded on your own personal initiative and creativity.   Your grade will be determined by the following:

1. STUDIO WORK- IN-CLASS PROJECTS 70% creativity skill/care competing on time meeting criteria

2. PERSONAL PROJECT BOOK (SKETCHBOOK) 10%

3. PARTICIPATION IN DISCUSSIONS AND CRITIQUES 10%
